Perhaps the richest repository of ancient
history and arts on the peninsula, the city of Gyong-ju is now
only a provincial town. But it was once the splendid Capital of Shilla |
|
Kindom(57
B.C - A.D. 935). Gyong-ju is literally a museum without walls, filled with
remains of ancient Shilla:Temple, Royal tombs, monuments, the earliest stone
observatoty in Asia, pagodas, and the crumbling remains of palaces and
fortresses. Gyong-ju is highly recommended to the tourist if he has time for
only one trip outside Seoul. |

The second largest city and principal
port of Korea lies on the southern tip of the peninsula and thus enjoys
somewhat milder weather than the Capital. Taking advantage of this and the
coastal location, several popular bathing beaches at Haeundae are clean and
sandy. Water is warm, currents are mild, and the summer weather is pleasant.
Tongnae is especially noted for its natural hot spring health baths.
There are
several hotels meeting international standards in each town. In Busan, there
is an impressive U.N. Cemetery, the only one of its kind in the World where the
dead from the 16 Korean War allies rest in honored serenity.

Within an hour's
ride of Busan are two of the most beautifully situated and interesting Buddhist
Temples in the nation. Pomosa and T'ongdosa. Like all Korean temples, these are
situated on secluded pine forested mountain slopes, and must be reached by car
or bus. |
